Last week saw me finally get around to eating at Meat Liquor and yesterday I finally made it to Lucky Chip. And after just one bite I was kicking myself that it had taken me so long – because Lucky Chip’s burgers are something else!
Located in the tiny little Netil Market round the corner from Broadway Market in Hackney, Lucky Chip arrived on the scene last year and pretty quickly gained themselves a reputation for their excellent burgers. Their menu isn’t overly complicated, offering just five burgers, three hot dogs and ‘naked’ fries. Don’t worry about the hot dogs though, because once you’ve seen the burgers, you’ll forget there’s anything else on the menu. With the burgers you can choose between the Cheeseburger, the Kevin Bacon, the Kelly Lebrock, the El Chappo or the Clint Eastwood Veggie burger. There’s also a weekly special some of which are hugely popular (this weeks was the Bill Murray Life Aquatic burger with some soft shell crab and guacamole).
As the special wasn’t available yesterday I got my standard order of a bacon burger and fries – or in Lucky Chip speak a Kevin Bacon and naked fries! While I was waiting I couldn’t help looking at everyone else’s food as it came out – the smell alone was intoxicating and you just knew it was going to be something special!
And you know what, it was a bloody awesome burger! Between the great flavour from the 32 aged beef patty, the sweetness from the pickles, the saltiness from the applewood smoked bacon, and the cheese, lettuce and condiments, all surrounded in a wonderfully soft brioche bun, I doubt there’s a better burger in London. Each component of the burger is clearly thought through and everything adds something to the mix, all adding up to one hell of a burger.
Yes, there’s bound to be comparisons to Meat Wagon and their various guises, and after my visit last week I get people’s obsession and I loved the food I had, but for my money Lucky Chip is easily the better burger! But it wasn’t just the burger, let’s not forget about the fries which were equally astounding and quite possibly some of the best i’ve had in London.
Lucky Chip isn’t in a particularly convenient location for me, but when their food is this good I will happily travel across the city, even if its cold and windy like yesterday! I may have been late to visit Lucky Chip but i’m a quick convert. If you haven’t already made it to Netil Market, what are you waiting for?
