Street Food Olympics

So you might have heard that later this week the sporting world descends on London for the Olympics. Love it or hate it, London will be full of tourists, athletes and who knows else for the next two weeks. While there might be plenty of negatives, one of the big positives is that street food is going to be everywhere!
Eat St at Kings Cross
By now who hasn’t heard about the Kings Cross street food haven run by Eat.St. Well London’s best street food venue is getting even better. For the duration of the Games the street food market will relocate slightly to the end of Kings Boulevard (Station Square). And the best bit of all, they’ll be open at weekends and into the evenings (8pm). You can expect the same great traders they always have, but all week long!

Exhibition Road Show (28th July – 5 August)
This is very exciting – for 9 days during the Olympics 35 different traders (20 a day) will be taking part in this festival on Exhibition Road in Kensington. The festival is a celebration of art, music, science and literature and of course good food. The entire food element of the festival has been organised by Eat.St and they’ll be showcasing some of the best street food in the city including Kimchi Cult, The Bowler, Daisy Green Frozen Yoghurt, Dosa Delhi, Buen Provecho and loads more. Also there will be one of my favourites from outside of London – Fish&, a great fish and chips hut from Leeds run by the founder of Northern StrEats.

If your heading to Greenwich for any of the Equestrian events, then head down to the Old Royal Naval College for the Summer Festival (which runs until 14th August) for your street food fix. The food is provided by Egg Boss, Red Herring Smokehouse, Spit and Roast and Ice Cream Union. Check out the website for daily opening times

The Olympic Park
Of course if your lucky enough to have actually got tickets to the Olympics you might be thinking you’ll have no other option than to head to MacDonalds for food at the Park, after all they’ve built their largest ever restaurant especially for London 2012. Well you’re in luck as even the Olympic Park can’t escape street food. As part of the prize for winning the 2011 British Street Food Awards, the sea food hut Cafe Mor will be setting up shop for the duration. They’ll be opening up five venues within the park giving you plenty of opportunity to try them for yourselves.

Red Market
The Old Street market is back for 2012 and is bigger than ever. What started out as a night market dedicated to street food has become pretty much a week long event. For the Olympics this market will be open Monday – Saturday 12.00 – 11pm serving up all kinds of things including food from Pasta e Basta, Gurmetti Italian Street Food, Fleisch Mob, Burger Bear and many more. You can find them in Old Street opposite the Holiday Inn.

That’s just five of the places you can catch your favourite street food traders over the next few weeks, but there’s plenty more – you can also catch Street Kitchen at The Book Club’s Basecamp, an outdoor bar, restaurant, and adult playground at 100 Leonard Street in Shoreditch, 27th July – 12th August, and I believe some of the Eat.St guys will also be at Haggerston Park for the big screen. Whatever your plans for the Olympics, whether you’re going to embrace them or hide from them, there’s plenty of street food across the city for the next few weeks to keep you well fed.

I discovered Red Market today and loved it! Good food, cheap price, lots of seating space, sand and hammocks! What’s not to love?!
I haven’t made it down yet, hoping to this weekend, looks great though!
